In order for students to gain a certification of their English level, we fund students who wish to take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, which opens up professional and academic opportunities upon resettlement.

Future Goals

Upon receiving the necessary financial support, ELNOR plans to:

  • Expand our program to more people in refugee camps and reception centers
  • Provide additional technological support to students in camp
  • Develop an innovative app with an extensive platform

Based on language levels standardized by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), our students can find lesson plans at an elementary level (A2), intermediate level (B1, B2), and advanced level (C1). We utilize a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) method of foreign language learning that centers on teaching interesting and engaging content, where vocabulary and grammar are taught in context of the material.

CLIL has been proven to be an effective method for adults learning a foreign language because it utilizes lexical immersion, rather than grammatical drilling, in order to teach communication in a foreign language. The core concept behind CLIL foreign language learning is communication. Lessons between tutor and student create a safe space for discussion and cultural exchange, which helps to foster a positive language learning experience and expand the student’s knowledge on an array of subjects in addition to language.

Proficiency in English is vital for those currently in refugee camps facing uncertain futures. This is especially true while navigating various important services such as legal assistance for resettlement.

Our mission is to bring our students, many of whom currently possess basic English skills, to the level of verbal and written communication that would greatly increase their social and professional opportunities both inside and outside the camp. Coinciding with a conversation-focused approach, ELNOR provides skill-building workshops, such as interview preparation.
